Ever wondered what would happen if you took Bram Stoker’s legendary vampire tale and put it into a blender with Mel Brooks, Monty Python, and The 39 Steps? That’s just what happens in this lightning-fast, laugh-out-loud, 90-minute, gender-bending romp. When her sister Mina falls ill with a mysterious disease of the blood, Lucy Westfeldt and her fiancé, Jonathan Harker, enlist the help of famed female vampire hunter Doctor Jean Van Helsing. Their hunt for the dangerous and sexy Count Dracula abounds with clever wordplay and quick-change antics. Five actors play over a dozen roles in this bloodcurdlingly hilarious send-up of the literary classic. Casting is flexible.

Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors premiered off-Broadway at New World Stages on September 4, 2023. Directed by Gordon Greenberg, the production featured Jordan Boatman, Arnie Burton, James Daly, Ellen Harvey and Andrew Keenan-Bolger. The play was first commissioned by the Maltz Jupiter Theatre and was further developed at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, the Capital Rep in Albany, NY and at the Segal Centre in Montreal, all under the direction of Greenberg. It premiered as radio play in May 2020 with a cast including Christopher Sieber, Laura Benanti, Annaleigh Ashford, Ashley Park, Alan Tudyk, James Monroe Iglehart and John Stamos.

Audition Requirements

  • No monologue is necessary. The audition will consist of cold readings from the script.
  • A headshot and resume are recommended but not required.
  • Please bring a detailed list of conflicts for the next 3 months.

Roles

Available roles: 5 available roles, 2 men and 3 of any gender/identity

  • Actor 1 – Male

    JONATHAN HARKER: 20’s – 40’s. He/him. Any ethnicity . RP British dialect. Neat Clean and proper and obsessive compulsive real estate agent, frightened of his own shadow. Has many diet restrictions. Engaged to his childhood crush Lucy Westfeldt and enamored of her fearlessness. He has confidence issues and hates conflict. Towards the end of the show Dracula kisses and bites him transforming him into a much more confident sexy mess style rock star in leather pants.
    Also plays: BOSUN: Any Gender. Irish dialect. A scurvy seaman who goes down with the ship in a storm.
    LORD CAVENDISH: He/him. Scottish dialect. Lucy’s suitor; a Scottish dolt.
    LORD WINDSOR: He/him. RP British dialect. Lucy’s suitor; posh, British and petulant.
    LORD HAVEMERCY: He/him.  dialect. Lucy’s arrogant suitor from Memphis, a la Elvis.
    (NOTE: LORD CAVENDISH, LORD WINDSOR and LORD HAVEMERCY. Is one person with 2 puppets playing all 3 roles.)
    GRAVEDIGGER: Any Gender. Cockney dialect. A drunk gravedigger with a secret.

  • Actor 2 – Any gender

    DR. WESTFELDT: Old Man . He/him (Can Be Portrayed by Any Gender) . Any ethnicity. RP British dialect. Lucy and Mina’s Father, a blowhard; self-important misogynist given to proclamations. A doctor caring for the criminally insane, he has recently lost his wife to consumption.
    Also plays: RENFIELD: He/him. Cockney dialect. Insane patient of Dr. Westfeldt who lives to serve and loves to eat bugs. Becomes Dracula’s go to man.
    CAPTAIN: He/him. Sea Captain dialect. The salty captain of a doomed ship caught in a raging storm.

  • Actor 3- Female

    LUCY WESTFELDT: 20’s – 40’s. She/her. Any ethnicity. RP British dialect. Brilliant plucky earth scientist daughter of Dr. Westfeldt, she is full of energy and the spirit of adventure and often underestimated because of her beauty. Engaged to Jonathan, but when Dracula moves to Whitby, she is curious about his strange ways and impressed by their similar interests.
    Also plays: KITTY: she/her. Cockney dialect. A dotty kleptomaniac patient of Dr. Westfeldt’s, she serves as a maid in his house. Think Mrs. Lovett but servile and easily distracted and loves any shiny things she can’t get her hands on
    DRIVER: Any Gender. Eastern European or Russian dialect. Transylvanian driver of the carriage carrying Jonathan to Dracula’s castle and tries to warn him. Borat meets Boris and Natasha.

  • Actor 4- Male
    MINA WESTFELDT:  She/her (But Portrayed by a Middle age Male Actor) . Any ethnicity. RP British Falsetto dialect. The less attractive, less intelligent Westfeldt daughter, she lives in her sister Lucy’s shadow and is desperate for attention. She loathe for any man she can get her hands on. She is immediately (pathetically) receptive to Dracula’s charms. She is portrayed by a middle aged man actor. Think Monty Python falsetto gender bent tropes.
    Also plays: DR. VAN HELSING: She/her. Any ethnicity. German dialect a la Mel Brooks. Brilliant and sturdy German vampire hunting doctor from the University of Schmutz. Deadly serious in the way Germans can be, she is accustomed to people not believing she is a real doctor. Strong, shmart, unt bold, she is a woman of action
  • Actor 5 – Any Gender
    DRACULA:     Ageless. Any Gender. Any ethnicity. Hugely sexy, magnetically hot, rock star presence, they are a narcissist whose greatest love is themself – and their leather pants. Bored with women falling all over him, he becomes obsessed with Lucy when he hears of her strength and adventurousness. The less she needs him, the more interested he is. He travels to Whitby to find her and make her his bride for eternity. Looking For someone who commands the stage, Knows the show is all about them, Flamboyant, BDE to a 10. Someone who steals the spotlight and does not give it back.
